They say that 50 is the new 30. I’m not sure I know what that means, but what I do know is that Grandmas and Grandpas aren’t what they used to be. There is no time for sitting in rocking chairs watching time creep on by. Grandparents are experts at discovering something new within themselves. There’s much to be done and the senior crew is busy. Shaming most of us with their ability to keep up and show us out, they are running in marathons, posting TikToc videos, taking up exciting hobbies and opening new businesses. Retirement? Ha! Retirement has turned into reinvention and opportunity. Senior citizens are living life like it’s all theirs. A selfish living that says, “I ain’t done yet!”
Nonetheless, a Grandparent is still a Grandparent, offering words of wisdom and sage advice, they are the voice of the ancestors, our connection to who we are and from where we come. They help us to laugh at ourselves and not take life too seriously. They have lived it and they know that time is fleeting and living is something we do and not something that happens to us. Grandparents are at that place where they can enjoy the ride and they try to take us along with them, so they open their hearts and their homes to us as a place of refuge from the “stuff” that we find ourselves in out in the world.
For many, Grandma and Grandpa’s house is a special place. We remember times in Grandma’s kitchen, special treats only she could make, bits of her heart in each spoonful. Shared moments with Grandpa, him talking about the good-old-days and simpler times. And if you hang around long enough you will hear grandparents talk about their own grandparents, transforming before your very eyes into children, enveloped in their own grandparent’s arms. Treasure troves of history, and family, where you become the spotlight, listening to the stories of how the family tree grows and how you took your Great Grandmother’s eyes and your Great Great Granfather’s disposition.
How precious it is to have them: Nana and Papa, Big Mama and Pop-pop, Oma and Opa, G’ma and Grand-Dad. Whatever you call them, they pull away the layers of the world and surround us with a love that’s unmatched. Grandparents fill our lives with indelible memories: quarters tucked in the palm of a hand, desert when mom says you’ve had enough, quiet moments enjoying the simple things like lemonade on the porch. Life wouldn’t be the same without them. Whether your Grands are in their 50s or in their 90s there’s nothing in the world like Grandma and Grandpa’s love.
September 13th is National Grandparent’s day. A day to recognize our living ancestors and show them love and appreciation. Even with social distancing you want to do something special for them. Creating Memories Gifts and More respects social distancing by safely delivering the lovely gift of your choice to the Grandparents in your life. Call Nan and Pap and let them hear your voice too, because even though they may be on a mission to conquer the world they are still Grandma and Grandpa, and that alone makes them very special.
